Will Latest Legislation Give Horse Racing A Leg Up In Industry?
DETROIT (WWJ) - A new effort is underway to prop-up Michigan's horse racing industry.
WWJ's Brian Larsen reports that the recent legislation that cleared a State Senate committee this week, revamps some regulation in a way that horse racing groups say will improve their financial situation.
But the measure is not without controversy and plenty of opposition, from casinos, as well as gambling opponents.
An attorney for Detroit's MGM Grand Casino told the panel that the bill does not specifically limit gaming to betting on horse races at the tracks, and, he says, if it does open the door to other gaming, it would be in violation of the state constitution.
