Wildfire Burns Through At Least 1,500 Acres
MENTOR TWP. (AP) - Authorities say a wildfire in Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula has burned at least 1,500 acres and forced the evacuation of about 50 homes.
WWTV/WWUP reports the fire burned near Mack Lake in Oscoda County's Mentor Township. The U.S. Forest Service says the fire was about 90 percent contained as of Thursday morning.
There were no reports of injuries or structures being burned. An American Red Cross shelter was set up in the nearby community of Mio.
Officials say rain was helping firefighting efforts.
The fire is in the area of the Huron National Forest. A message seeking updated information was left Thursday morning with the U.S. Forest Service.
The Oscoda County sheriff's department says the evacuated homes include some small subdivisions and most of them are seasonal homes.
