Why Tiger Will Lose At The Players-Lesson On Golf Blog
By: Jeff Lesson
It's pretty simple. The Players Championship has the strongest field in golf. It also is a course where you must drive it straight- as the rough is quite penal.
Those are the two biggest reasons why Tiger Woods will not win his 4th Tour event this week at The TPC Sawgrass. The others are that his last three finishes there were tied for 40th and two questionable WDs.
I say questionable because he cited injury as his reason for withdrawal in both. We all know he was playing through an injury the last couple years, but why did he never withdraw when he was playing well and only when he is playing poorly?
This is suspicious to me for someone as competitive as Tiger Woods is. Tiger's WDs should have been treated with the same disdain as Rory McIlroy's WD at the Honda earlier this year.
But a double standard still exists. There is Tiger and then there is everyone else.
This was apparent at the recent Masters as well with his rules violation. Without rehashing the entire episode it is my belief anyone but Tiger would have been DQ. And yes- I am aware that the PGA Tour, The R&A and Jack Nicklaus all supported allowing Tiger to stay.
Keep in mind that all three need Tiger more than Tiger needs them- especially Jack with his Memorial Tournament coming up. Without Woods in the field, any event draws at least 25% fewer folks.
Finally, At Augusta, he could spray it off the tee and still be able to hit the green. This week if you miss the fairways bogey is likelihood on any holes. And did you see how many trees Woods hit off the tee on Sunday?
