Who Would You Rather Have?
So I'm sitting here watching the Yankees take on the Twins and I can't stop thinking about how great it would be to once again watch the Tigers in the postseason. I admit that I think whatever season is going on, that the playoffs of that season are the greatest thing ever but there is something truly special about playoff baseball! Think about it, with the exception of the Lions going to the NFC Championship game in 1991, was there anything more electric for the area then the Tigers making it to the Fall Classic back in 06?
So as I sit and watch and remember I decided to root for the next best thing...former Tigers that are in the playoffs and believe it or not there are a lot of them. In fact you could field a whole offense and close to a bullpen with all that used to dawn the old english D. Of course we all know how important this offseason is for the Tigers coming up, but what about the team that we just saw? If you take the former Tigers that are in the 2010 playoffs versus the 2010 Tigers, who would you rather have and what team would have finished with the better record and maybe dare I even say playoffs?
Yes, I know this is silly, but it's also interesting to see who has gone on and gets a chance to experience one of the best things in sports, BASEBALL PLAYOFFS!
Here's how the teams stack up...
2010 Tigers-
Catcher- Alex Avila- .228 AVG- 7 HR's- 31 RBI
1st Base- Miguel Cabrera- .328 AVG- 38 HR's- 126 RBI...Miggy alone might be worth to choose this years team.
2nd Base- Since Detroit had so many players at this positions, I will let you decide. Ramon Santiago, Danny Worth, Will Rhymes and Scott Sizemore
Shortstop- Jhonny Peralta- .253 AVG- 8 HR's- 38 RBI in 57 games. I know other Tigers played short but this man is the 2011 future apparently so why not go with him?
3rd Base- Brandon Inge- .247 AVG- 7 HR's- 70 RBI
Outfielders- Again you can pick which ones you want but here are the ones that I chose.
LF- Ryan Raburn- .280 AVG- 15 HR's- 62 RBI
CF- Austin Jackson- .293 AVG- 4 HR's- 41 RBI
RF- Brennan Boesch- .256 AVG- 14 HR's - 67 RBI. Of course when we talk about Boesch we have to mention his .342 AVG in the 1st half and his .163 AVG after the All Star break.
DH- Johnny Damon- .271 AVG- 8 HR's- 51 RBI
Gerald Laird, Carlos Guillen, Don Kelly were among others that were on the bench. Magglio Ordonez of course played before seeing his season end with a broken ankle.
As for the former Tigers team that are now in the playoffs...
Catcher- Matt Treanor playing for the Braves- .211 AVG- 5 HR's- 27 RBI in 82 games
1st Base- Carlos Pena playing for the Rays- .196 AVG- 28 HR's, 84 RBI
2nd Base- Placido Polanco playing for the Phillies (I know he played the majority of the time at 3rd for Philly but he would have played 2nd for the Tigers)- .298 AVG- 6 HR's- 52 RBI
Short Stop- Edgar Renteria playing for the Giants- .276 AVG.- 3 HR's- 22 RBI
3rd Base- Omar Infante playing for the Braves- .321 AVG- 8 HR's- 47 RBI
Outfield-
LF- Andres Torres playing for the Giants- .268 AVG- 16 HR- 63 RBI
CF- Curtis Granderson playing for the Yanks in case you didn't know- .247 AVG- 24 HR's- 67 RBI
RF- Matt Joyce- .241 AVG- 10 HR's- 40 RBI
DH- Aubrey Huff- .290 AVG- 26 HR's- 86 RBI (why the hell could he not do that in Detroit?)
Coming off the bench would be Marcus Thames and Gabe Kapler.
In case you were wondering the pitchers involved in the playoffs but are not involved in this question are Chad Durbin, Kyle Farnsworth, Jair Jurgens and Fransisco Cordero.
Call me crazy but I would give up maybe the best player in the game to get more offense around the field. If you look at the former Tigers infield, not only can they hit and are consistent but they are solid defensively as well. Can you say the same for the 2010 Tigers? I would pick the former Tigers at the DH spo as wellt with Aubrey Huff. I know he was awful in Detroit but since being in San Fran he has lit the world on fire. And lastly as far as the outfield goes, I think you have to go with the former Tigers too. Torres has been reborn in San Fran while in my mind Granderson and Joyce are more solid than Jackson and Boesch together. So after watching the Twins blow another playoff game to the Yankees I admit that I would choose to have the former Tigers that are in the 2010 playoffs rather then the 2010 Tigers. What about you?
