Westland Struggling To Cope Following Weekend Storm
WESTLAND (WWJ) - It's been nearly two days and counting for about 50,000 DTE Energy customers who are still without power following Saturday's vicious storm.
WWJ's Vickie Thomas traveled to Westland to get a bird's-eye view of the damage and to see how residents in the city are coping. Vickie drove up and down Fernwood Street, and discovered that residents there took a beating from the storm. She saw lots of uprooted trees and downed power limbs. Jeanette Black's daughter lives on Fernwood, where an uprooted tree crashed through the back of her house.
"She just moved there two years ago, totally had redone the home," Black told Vickie. "Last year when we had the floods over here, she was flooded really bad and then she had a break-in; actually somebody broke into her bedroom window to rob them and then, now this."
Black is also without power. She lives a couple of blocks away from her daughter.
