Lockdown Lifted At West Bloomfield Elementary School

WEST BLOOMFIELD (WWJ) - A lockdown has been lifted at an elementary school in West Bloomfield.

The situation unfolded early Thursday morning  at Sheiko Elementary on Walnut Lake Road near Orchard Lake Road.

Principal Thomas Shelton said the school was put under lockdown "due to an ongoing police situation," adding that students were not in any danger.

"There was a police situation earlier here, a domestic situation between an employee and significant other," Superintendent Gerald Hill told WWJ's Charlie Langton. "Because of that, the police are searching for the person who created that incident."

Police sources said the situation involved a female custodian who was apparently assaulted by her ex-boyfriend.

"He's dangerous enough that he allegedly assaulted his female friend," said Police Chief Mike Patton. "The fact that those kind of things occur on or near a school campus sometimes elevates the concern. The school reacted very appropriately, very promptly and did all the right things."

Officers eventually spotted the man on the west side of the school's property and took him into custody without incident.

The lockdown was ordered before students arrived for the school day. Students were routed to West Bloomfield High School while police were investigating. After the all-clear was given by the police, students were bussed back to Sheiko. By 10 a.m., students were arriving at school to finally start the day.

An investigation is ongoing.
