Weather Alert: Sleet, Freezing Rain Likely

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - With freezing rain the forecast, Southeast Michigan motorists could be in for an icy, dicey morning commute. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. Wednesday for  Macomb, Oakland, Livingston, St. Clair, Washtenaw and Wayne counties.

WWJ-TV Chief Meteorologist Jim Madaus says this system will blow into Metro Detroit, beginning with light snow and sleet very early in the morning, changing into freezing rain as we head into AM drive time.

Madaus said as the temperature teeters around 32 degrees, we could see pockets of rain mixed with freezing drizzle.

So, just how bad will it be?

"That's a good question," said Madaus. "This won't be a major ice storm, but keep in mind that any amount of ice on the road can cause problems ... so it will probably be a slippery drive."

The National Weather service warns that limited visibility is possible. An ice accumulation of one tenth of an inch or less is expected.

The ice won't be sticking around for long, though.  Madaus says temperature will climb to a high around 50 degree later in the day.  "It's really turning out to be a rollar coaster week," said Madaus. Forecasters are calling for chance of thunderstorms in the area on Friday.
