Weather Alert: More Ice, Snow
SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - The National Weather Service says Southeast Michigan could be in for an icy drive-time commute. Forecasters say the prime time for a dangerous mix of snow, sleet and ice will continue until about 8 p.m.
Wednesday morning, a storm created near-blizzard conditions in parts of Michigan. The Flint area got more than four inches of sleet and snow.
In the northern Lower Peninsula -- Houghton Lake recorded 6 inches.
School closings for the day included Central Michigan University and the University of Michigan-Flint. Rain fell in the Detroit area, with temperatures at or above freezing.
By Wednesday afternoon, forecasters said an area from Ludington to Mount Pleasant could get 5-10 inches of snow and sleet.
Consumers Energy was working to restore electricity to about 12,000 customers in the middle of the state, following Tuesday night's storm. Debra Dodd says that the biggest outages are in Kent, Gennesse, Mountcalm and Newago Counties. Consumers hopes to restore all the power by late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.
WWJ's Ron Dewey spoke with plow driver Todd Myers of Fostoria, north of Lapeer, who was among those pushing through the deep snow.
"It's been pretty slippery up north, north of here... probably about five inches (of snowfall), and it's wet, slushy," Myers said.
