Weather Advisory In Effect Sunday-Monday
DETROIT (WWJ) - If you thought we'd seen the last of winter - think again.
A Winter storm warning is now in effect through 7 a.m. Monday for all of Southeast Michigan, according to Accuweather meteorologist Dave Bowers.
"We could be looking at some really, significant problems, not only for travel, but perhaps also for some tree and power line damage especially Sunday night," Bowers said.
"It'll start off cold enough to come into some snow. This will probably be during the mid-day hours Sunday around lunchtime, probably pick up an inch or two of snow and then go over to a prolonged period of some sleet and freezing rain, which will probably go well into Sunday night . So it's that kind of a combination here that, is going to lead to a buildup of ice on trees and power lines," Bowers says.
According to the National Weather Service, icing on exposed surfaces is expected. The weight of ice and wet snow may be heavy enough to break tree branches and bring down
power lines. Extended power outages will be possible.
Snow will mix with freezing rain and sleet Sunday evening. This mixture for snow, sleet and freezing rain will then continue overnight before precipitation tapers off in the morning.
Moderate accumulations of snow will cover roadways, and slick roads and sidewalks from mixed precipitation will make travel both in vehicles and on foot extremely dangerous, which may have big impacts on the Monday morning commute.
