Wayne State Plans 2015 Spring-Summer Tuition Break

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Wayne State University plans to offer a 30 percent tuition break for classes during the 2015 spring and summer semesters.

Margaret E. Winters, the school's provost, said the aim is to help students graduate faster.

"The Spring/Summer Tuition Break is intended to serve as motivation for the students out there who might be deciding between nine or 12 credits this fall," Winters said in a statement. "We are hopeful that this will create some urgency for them to add that extra class now and progress toward their degrees in the most cost-effective way possible."

The discount saves students about $100 per credit hour, or $300 to $400 per class. To get the discount, students must complete at least 24 credits total during fall 2014 and winter 2015 semesters and have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.

"We care deeply about keeping the cost of a college education affordable for our students and their families," Debbie Dingell, chair of the Wayne State University Board of Governors, said in a statement. "This program helps with that, while also encouraging students who are able to attend full-time shorten their time to degree completion."

Between 10 percent and 15 percent of students took spring and summer classes last year. Tuition rates for spring and summer classes are the same as for fall and winter classes.
