Wayne State Journalism Student Wins Scholarship From Broadcast Film Critics Association
DETROIT (WWJ) - A scholarship aimed at furthering the art and practice of broadcast film criticism has just been awarded to a Wayne State University journalism student.
The 2016 Terri Lee-Sylvester Scholarship is courtesy of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA). Jasmine Espy, a senior at WSU, says the $1,500 award will go a long way towards helping her complete her college education.
"This scholarship means that I have a better chance of completing college," Espy said. "I graduate in May of 2017, so every cent counts, especially when your parents aren't paying or helping. I would rather have a scholarship than take out loans from the government, so this will definitely help me to fulfill my collegiate career."
When Espy graduates, she plans to pursue a career in journalism. And, when it comes to the film industry, she says she enjoys watching movies for more than just entertainment.
"I started doing movie reviews for The South End at Wayne State University, which is our student newspaper, and it really got me into ... looking at films critically instead of just from an entertainment perspective, so looking at the characters, the plot, all of those things, and I always have been interested in how movie reviews are written."
As far as which path she plans to take, Espy says her future career goals include working as a print journalist, and possibly a producer for a radio station. She's also interested in post production and sound engineering work. And, she's ever-so-grateful to the BFCA for getting her closer to achieving her goals.
"I'm so grateful for this opportunity, and I really appreciate everybody at WWJ and Terri Lee-Sylvester for this," Espy said. "I also want to thank the Broadcast Film Critics Association for this scholarship, as well. It means so much to me. Thank you."
