Wayne State Hosting FREE HealthCare-O-Rama Event This Weekend

DETROIT (WWJ) - A FREE healthcare fair is being held this weekend at Wayne State University to help young adults and other citizens get information needed to enroll in the federal health care program before the February deadline.

HealthCare-O-Rama will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday Jan. 24, at the General Lectures building on the main campus of Wayne State University.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will provide information about health care plans and options that are available through local health care companies and healthcare.gov.

This event is designed to make it easier for people to get the care and coverage they need.

Claudia Swink, from Health Alliance Plan, said the event will be especially useful for young adults, many who are unsure if they can even afford healthcare.

"They don't realize that if they fall into certain cost parameters, that their finances and their family composition are within a certain criteria, they might qualify for assistance from the government," Swink said.

HealthCare-O-Rama will also feature free health screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, body mass index and blood glucose levels. A host of healthy living vendors will offer cooking demos, fitness sessions, information on holistic health methods, expert nutritional advice and more.

Navigators and insurance professionals will be available to answer questions and help attendees enroll in a 2015 health plan before the Open Enrollment deadline of Feb. 15.

Although the event is free, individuals are asked to register at www.healthcareorama.com or by calling 313-924-0085.

HealthCare-O-Rama is organized by Friends of Detroit & Tri-County and sponsored by Health Alliance Plan.
