Wayne County Clerk Sprays For Bugs After Man Brings Insects Into Office
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Insects that showed up with a person applying for a concealed pistol license at the Wayne County Clerk's Office prompted officials to spray the area and shut down for the day.
Office spokeswoman Jina Sawani said the customer came into the second-floor office in downtown Detroit on Monday to apply for a concealed pistol license. When he opened a binder, she said, "some kind" of insects fell out at the clerk's counter. (Sawani did not, or was unable to, specify what kind).
She said there was no infestation, but the office was closed for the rest of the day so the carpet could be sprayed for bugs as a precaution.
"You know, it comes with the territory," Sawani told WWJ's Sandra McNeill. "Anytime you've got a public office or facility, you've got members from the general public going through there, and we just didn't want to chance it and we wanted to prevent anything from spreading."
The office in the Coleman A. Young Municipal Building was back open Tuesday and was "clean" according to Sawani, who said other offices weren't affected.
This is the only recent reported incident of this kind in the city. In 2012, the 36th District Court in Detroit was evacuated after a bailiff observed bugs crawling on a man in the first row of seats.
