Wayne County Bemoans Cuts Amid Budget Crunch

DETROIT (WWJ) - Wayne County employees will be asked to continue taking a 10 percent pay cut in the next fiscal year that begins for the county on October 1st.

But, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Commissioner Bernard Parker says County Executive Robert Ficano's proposed $8 million cut to the Sheriff's Department is unacceptable.

"What he has asked for is for every department to take a 10 percent cut. But, I still maintain that some departments are more important than other departments and we need to start to prioritize what services we are going to provide in Wayne County," he told WWJ's Florence Walton.

"Like, public safety, I think that, you know, in that area we need to increase money if anything," Parker said.

Ficano is trying to reduce a $160 million accumulated deficit he says was caused by declining property tax revenues and overspending by the Circuit Court.

Ficano is scheduled to formally present his budget to Commissioners next week.
