Wayne County Approves New Criminal Justice Center Deal
DETROIT (AP) - Wayne County officials have approved a deal for a new criminal justice center just north of downtown Detroit.
County commissioners voted 14-1 Thursday on the agreement with developer Rock Ventures. Work on the $533 million complex could start this fall. It is expected to be completed in 2022.
The deal includes a 2,280-bed jail, sheriff and prosecutor offices, criminal courthouse and juvenile detention facility.
Wayne County will invest $380 million in the project. Rock Ventures will cover the remaining costs and any overruns. In exchange, the company will get the sites of two current jails, a juvenile detention facility and county courthouse.
Detroit-based Rock Ventures also will get the site of an unfinished county jail project where it plans a major, mixed use development.
