Was Officer In Shootout Hit By Friendly Fire?
DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police are not commenting on reports that an officer injured in a shootout this week may have been struck by friendly fire. The shooting, which took place on the city's west side Tuesday evening, left two officers wounded.
Interim Detroit Police Chief Chester Logan told reporters that he "can't discuss that."
One of the officers remained hospitalized in critical condition on Thursday after the other had been released.
Witnesses told WWJ Newsradio 950 that they heard at least 20 shots fired that night when police exchanged gunfire with murder suspect, 23-year-old Matthew Joseph, who was killed in the shootout.
Joseph was out on parole for armed robbery and felony firearms convictions.
Detroit police, the ATF and Michigan State Police continue to investigate. The state police crime lab is handling ballistics.
