Suspect Arrested, 2 Hurt When Warren Police Chase Ends With Crash In Detroit
DETROIT (WWJ) - One man has been arrested and at least two people are hurt following an attempted home invasion, police chase, and crash Thursday morning.
According to Warren Police Commissioner Jere Green, it all began with a 911 call from a home on Topher Street off of Van Dyke Ave.
"There were two persons at the home — a 19-year-old and a 15-year-old — and they obviously startled the intruder," Green told WWJ Newsradio 950's Beth Fisher. "They called their mom before then called 911, and she called 911. We had officers in the area, and they made contact immediately. A chase followed into Detroit."
Green said Warren officers were joined by State police, pursuing the suspect until the chase ended in a crash at Iroquois and East Warren on Detroit's northwest side.
That's where, he said, the suspect collided with some innocent parties in a vehicle traveling through an intersection.
"The bad guy fled on foot," Green said. "He was apprehended, taken into custody, just arrived here at the Warren P.D. moments ago."
There were three people in the other vehicle involved in the crash, Green said: an elderly man, an elderly woman, and a child. Two of them were taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital with what were thought to be non-life-threatening injuries — although it was not immediately known which too.
WWJ Newsradio 950 spoke with Detroit resident James Coleman who was at the scene.
"You've got an army of police out here, you've got one, two EMS," Coleman said. "... You've got the state police, you've got the Warren police — so, apparently this chase came out of Warren."
"This is something that you don't see everyday, but they wasn't letting this guy go," Coleman added. "So whatever he did must have been very dangerous."
The suspect was described as a man around 30 years old.
His name was not immediately released as an investigation continues.
Meantime, State Police Lt. Mike Shaw says a second arrest was made nearby, unrelated to the home invasion and chase.
Shaw says a sergeant investigating the crash was flagged down in the area of Helen Street and Fredrick by a woman who said she'd just been sexually assaulted in an abandoned home.
The victim was able to give a good description of the suspect, and the sergeant found him hiding in between some abandoned houses. After a brief foot chase, the alleged attacker was arrested and turned over to Detroit police to await charges.
