Wanted: Michiganders To Fill Manufacturing Jobs
AUBURN HILLS (WWJ) - You have heard the stories about the death of manufacturing in Michigan, but one Auburn Hills company says they have nearly two dozen jobs open and can't find the workers to fill them.
William Moore is the HR manager at Delta Technologies Group in Auburn Hills, a company which managed to survive the recession intact.
Moore said he's tried everything to find qualified candidates, "I've placed ads in all the papers as well as on line, very few people are interested," he told WWJ Newsradio 950's Marie Osborne.
Moore said the jobs start right around $20-an-hour, they have benefits and plenty of overtime. "We require a high school diploma or a GED and some advanced training" said Moore, although there is one-on-one training once you are hired.
The problem is not unique to Michigan. Manufacturing or skilled jobs are going unfilled around the country. Recently, the Washington Business Journal revealed that 600,000 manufacturing jobs are going unfilled due to lack of qualified candidates.
Moore believes the problem was made worse by the recession but adds he thinks the industry never trained its 'next generation' of workers. Moore turned to the Focus Hope Machinist program to hire two new workers. He's troubled that that program has lost its state funding and is in jeopardy of shutting its doors.
As for whether or not these jobs will be here in the future, Moore said there will always be a place for manufacturing and a high tech world.
Qualified candidates may contact Delta Technologies at (248) 391-6800.
