Walk In W. Bloomfield Honors Dr. King's Work
WEST BLOOMFIELD (WWJ) - A walk to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was held in West Bloomfield Sunday.
WWJ's Beth Fisher reports that a few hundred people marched for about a mile - starting at West Bloomfield High School - then returned to the school for a program about Dr. King.
Wayne State's Dr. Silas Norman Jr. - who worked in the civil rights movement with Dr. King - was the keynote speaker.
"My recollection of him is a very thoughtful, humble and charismatic individual who was an auteur above pier - and whose sincerity I never doubted," said Norman.
Norman says King taught them a lot because he was willing to stand by his principles.
Debbie Macon helped kick off 'United We Walk' some 18 years ago.
"I feel so proud to be a part of a community that elevates diversity and inclusion to the level we have - we block off the main road artery in West Bloomfield and I like to say, 'greater West Bloomfield stops everything', to make sure we have the time and space to walk down the center of Orchard Lake Road," said Macon.
Macon says they are launching 'MLK 365' for them to respect those universal community values.
