Volunteers Needed To Pack Thanksgiving Meals For Seniors

DETROIT (WWJ) - The Detroit Area Agency on Aging is searching for about 200 volunteers to help deliver Thanksgiving meals to senior citizens across the region.

Paul Bridgewater, the agency's president, said volunteers will serve as support as they pack and deliver 6,000 meals to metro Detroit seniors. The meals will include turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, apple pie, whole wheat rolls, fruit juice and milk.

"It's almost like a production, in the sense that we do the cold packs and we put them in the freezer, then we'll come in on Thursday morning and do the hot packs, then the volunteers will come and take meals to then sites through the region," he said.

Bridgewater said volunteers must be at least 18-year-old and available to donate their time on Wednesday and again on Thursday.

"On Thanksgiving, volunteers come out and deliver the meals by noon, then they're back at home with their own families to celebrate the holiday," he said.

Bridgewater said if they don't get enough volunteers, their own staff will have to work double-time -- but they would love the extra support.
