Volunteers In Metro Detroit Deliver Meals, Toys
The holiday season may be a time for shopping, eating, gifting and getting -- but, for some, it's also a time for helping those less fortunate. Volunteers throughout metro Detroit have been busy delivering the holiday spirit to those in need.
The Detroit News says about 200 volunteers served hot meals to the homeless during the Salvation Army of Metro Detroit's annual Christmas morning breakfast Saturday morning at the Masonic Temple in downtown Detroit. An estimated 2,000 people were expected to be served in the iconic building's basement cafeteria.
Seventy-one-year-old volunteer Velma Williams of Mount Clemens arrived at 6 a.m. and said she just wants to make people "feel as if they're valued — because they are."
Hundreds of DTE employees, retirees and family members also delivered meals to nearly 6,000 homebound seniors through metro Detroit.
More than 100 local Muslims delivered bags of toys to needy families in southwest Detroit.
