Verlander's Six-Inning Streak Ends In Boston Rain
RHP Justin Verlander wobbled in the fourth inning Tuesday and then game-long rain ended his pitching durability streak after he worked five innings. Verlander had made 63 starts of at least six innings (a streak that began in 2010 after another rain-shortened start) but now will have to try to start a new one in his next outing. It was the longest such streak since Steve Carlton had a 69-start run from September 1979 to April 1982. It was also the longest by a Tigers pitcher since at least 1918. Verlander needed 35 pitches to work through the first inning without allowing a run, and he was up 107 when he finished the fifth. The game was halted with two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the sixth. Verlander's fastball command wasn't what it normally is; he walked four for the third time this season.
--3B Miguel Cabrera remains the rock of Detroit's offense. In a rain-shortened game in which the Tigers scored just once on three hits, Cabrera drew a bases-loaded walk to constitute Detroit's offense. It's a measure of his plate discipline that Cabrera will take a walk in a key spot rather than swing at a bad pitch. His walk Tuesday came with two outs in the third.
