Verlander Suddenly Loses His Way And The Game
--RHP Justin Verlander was nearly perfect for eight innings, but proved he's human in the ninth. Verlander had allowed only one hit and a walk, facing one over the minimum number of batters, while throwing but 81 pitches through eight innings. But he threw 23 pitches in the ninth and was charged with four runs as Detroit's four-game winning streak was ended, 4-2, by Tampa Bay. "I felt like I pitched exceptionally well the first eight innings," Verlander said. "I've just got to remember what happened in the ninth and learn from it." Said manager Jim Leyland: "I think he got out of whack a little bit. He was anxious to close it out."
--3B Miguel Cabrera continues to show why Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon likes to walk him whenever possible. Maddon passed up an excuse to intentionally walk Cabrera in the first inning Wednesday with a runner on second with one out, and Cabrera burned him with an RBI single to center. He singled his second time up but never batted with a runner on base the remainder of the game.
