Verlander So Close ... Tigers Beat Angels
DETROIT (WWJ) - An error and other misplays in the eighth inning ended a no-hit run by the Tigers' Justin Verlander but the Tigers still beat the Los Angeles Angels 3-2 on Sunday.
As heard on 97.1 The Ticket Verlander was staring at his second no-hitter of the season but had to settle for his 15th win in a one hit game through eight innings of play.
Maicer Izturis hit an RBI single with two outs in the eighth inning for the Los Angeles Angels' first and only hit off Detroit's Justin Verlander.
Magglio Ordonez hit a two run shot off of Jered Weaver and scored Don Kelly for the RBI - in the third inning. Carlos Guillen got off a solo shot to right off Weaver and gave a long sideways look to Weaver as he slowly made his way around the bases to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead in the seventh.
Weaver threw toward the head of the next Tiger batter, Alex Avila, and was immediately ejected from the game.
The eighth inning saw two unearned runs score for the Angels. The Tigers held on as Jose Valverde relieved Verlander to get the last three outs in the ninth inning to give the Tigers the win and earn his 28th save.
