CBS DETROIT - Starting pitcher Justin Verlander will not throw again until the soreness from a right triceps strain abates, Detroit Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand said Monday. In the meantime, Verlander will be undergoing daily treatment.
"He's in a holding pattern right now until we get him asymptomatic," Rand said. "He threw a sim game and he had some soreness after that, and that was a little more soreness than what we wanted to see, and so basically we're treating him only right now until we get him back asymptomatic, and then we'll start throwing again.
"We've done testing and we've had multiple opinions," Rand continued. "We waited until we felt we needed to."
The testing included an MRI, which Rand said just showed the original diagnosis of a right triceps strain. Rand disputed the notion Verlander is coming along more slowly than originally anticipated.
"Everybody thinks it's taking a little bit longer," Rand said with a laugh. "We kind of never really put out there how long we thought it was going to be. We just said we're going to take him various steps and as he's progressed. Well, when he wasn't able to make a step that we wanted, that's when we decided to [do] testing at that point in time because it gave us a little bit more concern, but turned out everything was as we had expected from the beginning."
