Verlander Guts Out Victory

RHP Justin Verlander struggled with the strike zone for four innings Tuesday night but was efficient in his last two to record his 49th consecutive start of at least six innings. Verlander allowed four of his seven hits and all three runs in the third inning and his frustration at the strike zone caused him to bark at the home plate umpire, bringing C Gerald Laird and pitching coach Jeff Jones out to steer him back to the mound and quiet him down. "Verlander certainly wasn't at his best," said manager Jim Leyland, ejected in the third inning for squawking about the strike zone, "but a little later in the game he got better." "The first four innings for me, were some of the toughest four innings I've had to throw," Verlander said. "I really struggled with command of my fastball."
