Verlander Goes The Distance

Justin Verlander stopped Detroit's latest slide Sunday with a complete-game win at Pittsburgh.

"We had the horse going and he pitched like the horse is supposed to pitch," manager Jim Leyland said after Verlander's five-hit outing, in which the only blemish was a tying two-run home run he gave up in the seventh. "He left the changeup up to (RF Garrett) Jones; he hit it out. He closed it out."

Verlander walked just one and struck out seven. He threw a lot of sliders in his previous start against the Pirates, a one-hitter, but this time milked his curve and changeup.

"I was cruising along and then, uh-oh, before you look up it's a tie game," Verlander said. "I was able to go out there and keep those guys off the board. I was picking them up through the first six or seven and then they had to pick me up. Just one mental slip, one bad pitch, and he hit it over the fence for a two-run home. My thought process is I'm hoping our guys can scratch across one or two and get me back out there with a chance to win."
