"Remarkable, Easy Performance" By Verlander
DETROIT (WWJ) - Justin Verlander threw his second career no-hitter and the second in the big leagues this week, leading the Detroit Tigers to a 9-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday.
Verlander was asked when he started to think about the possibility of a no-hitter.
"Probably about the third, fourth or fifth inning, somewhere along there - same as last time," says Verlander.
Tigers manager Jim Leyland says he's not surprised Justin Verlander could throw a second career no-hitter.
"He's got two of them now, and it doesn't surprise me, and it wouldn't surprise me if he got another in his career, that's how good his stuff can be on days," says Leyland.
"I mean, he retired just one after another, and he was making it look easy. He had command of everything, his breaking ball, his fast ball, so he was getting ahead in the count, and just putting hitters away quickly," says The Ticket's Pat Caputo.
"When he's struggles, hitters foul pitches off him, and his pitch count gets high. For him, this was a remarkable easy performance," adds Caputo.
Verlander barely missed a perfect game. He becomes the 30th pitcher in major league history to throw multiple career no- hitters.
