Verlander Cleared To Begin Throwing Again

CBS DETROIT - Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Justin Verlander has been cleared to resume throwing, the team announced Wednesday.

Verlander had hinted at the encouraging news on his Instagram feed Wednesday morning, when he posted a photo of a green traffic light and wrote, "Green means go!!! Gas pedals on the right!"

Verlander started the season on the disabled list with a right triceps strain, and he left a simulated game April 15 due to fatigue. Soreness he felt after that game prompted the Tigers to prohibit Verlander from throwing again until an MRI showed no inflammation and no fluid in the triceps.

Last year, coming off core repair surgery, Verlander had one of the roughest seasons of his career, allowing the most earned runs of any pitcher in the American League. He still made 32 starts, but his ERA was 4.54, and his strikeouts dropped to 159, down from 217 the previous season.
