Verlander Backs Off On His Heater On Hot Night
Justin Verlander breezed through six steamy innings Tuesday night against St. Louis before his control wobbled and he allowed two unearned runs in the seventh. The two runs scored on a bases-loaded, two-run error by LF Quintin Berry. Verlander came out on a steamy 92-degree night and pitched to contact right away, an approach made easier when his teammates had him up 4-0 after two innings of play. "My guys gave me a lead to work with," he said, "so I tried to be economical. That's why I came out 90, 91, 92 (mph with his fastball)." Manager Jim Leyland felt the 2-2 slider Verlander broke off to LF Allen Craig was a key moment. "That was the nastiest slider I've ever thrown," Verlander said after raising his interleague record to 18-2, best among active pitchers since he entered the majors in 2006.
