Verizon Wireless Expands 4G To Flint, Grand Rapids, Lansing And More Of Metro Detroit
Grand Rapids, Flint, Lansing and more areas of metro Detroit will get 4G Long Term Evolution high-speed data service from Verizon Wireless beginning June 16, the telecom giant announced Monday.
Residents and businesspeople who rely on 4G LTE smartphones, laptop modems and hot spots will be able to take advantage of speeds up to 10 times faster than the company's 3G network.
Cities, towns and major roads in the expanded coverage area include:
Flint area: Flint, Flushing and Grand Blanc; M-57 between I-75 and M-54; along I-75 to the Dixie Highway-M-54 interchange.
Grand Rapids area: Cascade, East Grand Rapids, Grand Rapids, Grandville, Kentwood and Wyoming; from the north, Leonard Street between US-131 and I-96; between US-131 and I-96 south to 44th Street; and Broadmoor Avenue S.E. from 44th Street to 68th Street.
Lansing area: Dewitt, Dimondale, East Lansing, Haslett, Holt, Laingsburg, Lansing, Okemos and Waverly; along I-69 from Business Loop 69 and US-27; along I-96 between Webberville and the US-27/I-69 interchange
Metro Detroit Market Expansion: Ann Arbor, Brighton, Plymouth, Walled Lake and Ypsilanti; along I-96 between Novi and Brighton; along US-23 between Ann Arbor and Brighton; along Michigan Avenue between Canton and Ypsilanti; and along I-94 between Romulus and Ann Arbor.
"Michigan is a very tech savvy state, and there's been tremendous pent-up demand for the advantages our 4G LTE network brings," said John Granby, president of the Michigan-Indiana-Kentucky region for Verizon Wireless. "With the ability to move large files faster and experience real-time, smooth video conferencing, business customers and consumers, alike, will enjoy the immediate benefits this advanced network offers. But, this is only the beginning. The capabilities of 4G LTE are limitless."
Verizon says that in real-world network environments, 4G LTE users should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink. Verizon began introducing the globe's first large-scale LTE network last Dec. 5, covering more than 110 million Americans, and is building out its 4G LTE network, and is on course to deliver 4G LTE to its entire 3G wireless footprint by the end of 2013.
