Verizon Expanding 4G In Michigan Past Metro Detroit
Verizon Wireless said Monday that the Grand Rapids, Lansing, Saginaw and Bay City areas would be among 140 markets nationwide to get high-speed fourth-generation, or 4G LTE high-speed data service this year.
The company said an exact time frame would not be available.
Verizon launched 4G service in the Detroit area last November -- initially only in the far northern and western suburbs, then by January in most of the metro area, as frequency interference problems were solved with a Canadian TV station.
Initially only laptop users were able to take full advantage of the speed, but Verizon is now beginning to introduce 4G-capable phones.
On 4G service, data users get LAN office network-like download speeds of 10 to 14 megabits per second, and upload speeds that are often nearly as fast
