Man Found Guilty In Detroit Police Officer's Death
DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit man faces life in prison, found guilty of killing a Detroit police officer and wounding four others during a shootout last year on the city's east side.
Jason Gibson was found guilty on all 17 counts -- including first-degree murder, in the May 3rd fatal shooting of Officer Brian Huff. Gibson also faces four counts of assault with intent to murder, as well as weapons, home invasion and drug charges.
A Wayne County jury announced the verdict, Wednesday afternoon, following an 18-day trial.
Huff was shot twice -- through his jaw and in the side of his head -- by 45-caliber bullets as he entered an abandoned home to investigate a reported burglary.
"We are extremely grateful to the jury. Justice was served today," said Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Thomas Trzcinski, in a statement.
Brian Glover, Huff's friend and fellow officer, was there when Huff was shot in the line of duty.
"I'm glad that a cold-blooded murdered is gonna sit in jail for the rest of his life. Sit there and think about what he did to Mrs. Huff -- destroy her family," Glover said.
"My family, the other officers' families had to go through a traumatic event for someone who's been nothing be a criminal his whole life," he said.
Gibson will be sentenced before Judge Cynthia Gray Hathaway on May 5, 2011 to mandatory life in prison.
