Vandalism At Detroit Historical Museum
(Detroit-WWJ) An act of vandalism damaged a priceless artifact at the Detroit Historical Museum Thursday.
The Detroit Historical Society says a male visitor to the museum pulled a fire alarm and in the process damaged the Meier Clock, located in Round Hall near the museum store.
The Detroit Fire Department, Wayne State University Police and Detroit Police responded to the alarm. WSU Police took the suspect into custody.
The museum is still in the process of assessing the damage to the Meier Clock, built in Detroit more than a century ago by master clockmaker Louis Meier, Sr, who owned a jewelry store on Gratiot and East Grand Blvd.
The Meier Clock was displayed at the 1906 Michigan State Fair and the Chicago World's Fair of 1934.
The Meier family donated the timepiece to the Historical Museum in 1982. It was restored in 1999, but has not been operational since 2006.
