Vandal Strikes ArtPrize Entry In Grand Rapids
GRAND RAPIDS (WWJ/AP) - A large, rotating sphere that was installed in Grand Rapids as part of the annual ArtPrize competition has been damaged by a vandal.
Judy Rogers of Gowen returned to her entry "Love Is..." on Monday night to find that the work had been knocked over.
Witnesses told police someone hammered on the artwork until the 8-foot by 8-foot sphere came off its support.
"I can't believe someone would do something like that," Rogers told MLive.com. "Look at all this other artwork downtown. Nobody is touching it."
Rogers' entry is covered in drawings about love by students from Lincoln Heights and Cedar Crest Elementary schools in Greenville. The globe rotates while amplified music from school choirs is played.
Rogers said she's not sure if she'll be able to repair the artwork in time for the students' field trip visit later this week.
It's the second vandalism report this year during ArtPrize. A work titled "Bridging Humanity" on the Gillett Pedestrian Bridge was reported vandalized last month. The entry, a series of sculptures spanning the entire length of the bridge, suffered a damaged bell and a stand that was thrown into the Grand River.
