Valenti and Foster: Are U-M Fans OK With Devin Gardner As Their Quarterback?
University of Michigan starter Devin Gardner has gone from super-recruit quarterback of the future, to converted wide receiver, to emergency quarterback, and to full-time quarterback during his four-year career with the Wolverines.
Gardner has been subject to scrutiny this season despite recording a 9-4 record as Michigan's starting quarterback over the last season and a half and nearly beating Ohio State and South Carolina last season.
The worst loss of Gardner's career came this past weekend as Michigan got stomped by Michigan State, 29-6 in East Lansing. Gardner's numbers aren't too bad either, as he has accounted for 22 touchdowns this along with 15 turnovers this year.
97.1 The Ticket's Mike Valenti and Terry Foster want to know: Should the Wolverines stick with Gardner at quarterback or give 4-star freshman Shane Morris a chance to compete for the starting job?
"Are you okay that Devin Gardner is going to be your absolute starter for the rest of this season and next season?," Valenti challenged Michigan fans on Friday. "Would you like to see Shane Morris mixed in and see what he can really do? Do you want to take a peek at the super-recruit so you can expedite the process going into next year."
Foster seems to think that the two quarterbacks should eventually compete directly for the starting job.
"This is a guy (Gardner ) who was removed from the quarterback position and had some issues with his offensive coordinator," Foster said. "They had to bring him back when Denard Robinson got hurt with no choice. I say you give Morris a couple series a game, then in spring practice hold an open contest and let the best man win."
What do you think about Gardner's performance this season? Do you want to see Shane Morris on the field more this season?
