Used Car Lot Overload Along 8 Mile
DETROIT (WWJ) - Have they got a car for you! There are at least 67 use car dealership along the 8 Mile Road corridor, with several more preparing to open -- sometimes one right next to another
Tami Salisbury of the Eight Mile Boulevard Association (8MBA) says the dealerships are attracted to the potential drive-in traffic along the major state trunkline that borders Macomb, Wayne and Oakland counties.
However, she tells WWJ Newsradio 950 the dealerships themselves are not very attractive.
"Some of them have these metal walls which I don't believe are conducive to these neighboring homes, particularly the tall fences and barbed wire, which is a challenge," Salisbury said.
Salibury doesn't want to close the businesses. She just wants them to spiff up a bit.
Salsbury would also like to see a little more variety. "Any time an industry is over-concentrated it drives other businesses out," she said.
Salisbury is assisting 8 Mile car dealerships with landscaping improvements while working with the city of Detroit and border communities on zoning issues.
