US Attorney Now Tweeting

DETROIT -- The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Michigan has opened a Twitter account to assist in providing the citizens in area communities with information about news, events, and special announcements.

The use of Twitter by the U.S. Attorney's Office follows the lead of the U.S. Department of Justice, which began using social media in 2009.

"With more and more people relying on social media, we want to make sure that we are reaching those audiences," U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade said. "We think it is important to keep the public informed about the work we are doing with taxpayer dollars, and we hope that awareness of our
prosecutions has a deterrent effect on crime."

In addition to Twitter, the U.S.Attorney's Office also maintains a Web site that is the primary source of information. In addition, neither the Department of Justice nor the U.S. Attorney's Office collects, maintains or disseminates information posted there.

The Web site is at www.justice.gov/usao/mie.
