University Of Phoenix To Close 8 Locations In Michigan
KALAMAZOO (WWJ/AP) - University of Phoenix plans to close eight of its 10 Michigan locations as part of a broader effort to phase out some of its campuses and learning centers.
The campus and satellite locations being closed in the state are reported to include Ann Arbor, East Lansing, Flint, Livonia, Macomb, Portage, Troy and Walker. School officials say they plan to keep locations in Detroit and Southfield open.
University of Phoenix's Alex Clark told MLive.com the locations being phased out won't be enrolling new students and are expected to stay open until current students earn their degrees.
Nationwide, University of Phoenix is closing 25 main campuses and 90 smaller satellite learning centers. The 13,000 students affected by the U.S. closings will be allowed to transfer or switch to online learning.
Following the closures, University of Phoenix will be left with 112 locations in 36 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Clark said the closures will save the company about $300 million.
Earlier this week, the for-profit school's parent company, Apollo Group Inc., reported a 72 percent drop in year-to-year earnings.
Clark said the University of Phoenix has 328,000 students nationwide, which is down from a peak of more than 400,000.
It wasn't immediately clear how many jobs in Michigan would be affected by the closures.
