University Drive Bridge Deemed Unsafe, Will Close For Repair
AUBURN HILLS (WWJ) - A major bridge over I-75 in Oakland County is now closed -- after bridge inspectors deem it unsafe.
The bridge in question is the University Drive Bridge near Opdyke Road in Auburn Hills.
MDOT says beams holding up the overpass were in critical condition.
Auburn Hills Lieutenant Ryan Gagnon says alternate routes will need to be taken while repair work begins.
"From what we understand, the thru ramps will be open as well as exit ramps from (I) 75 - University, however, traffic won't be able to cross the bridge at all. They will only be allowed to make right hand turns."
"Bigger alternative routes for us is taking Squirrel road down to M-59 and then taking M-59 westbound to I-75 south," said Gagnon. "That's the most logical and bigger roads to get to I-75."
New supports will now be installed -- but MDOT says to expect the closure to last at least one week.
