U.S. Ambassador To Libya Among 4 Americans Killed In Benghazi Attack
WASHINGTON (WWJ) - President Barack Obama is condemning the attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya that killed four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens. The protesters were angry over a film that ridiculed Islam's Prophet Muhammad.
"It's a problem when you have religious fanatics or extremists that are willing to use violence to gain their ends," said U.S. Senator Carl Levin of Michigan chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee.
Levin said this is the type of tragedy we haven't seen in a long time.
"It's a very, very sad day for the United States. I think it's been a couple of decades now that have gone by since we've lost an American Ambassador," said Levin. "Just a deep dismay that people attack innocent folks and we have an Ambassador there who's not a warrior, he's an Ambassador and three of his staff were killed in this attack."
Pentagon officials, meantime, said they are was working with the State Department to increase security of personnel in Libya.
