U.S. Airways-American Airlines Deal A Go
ROMULUS (WWJ) - A major merger has been announced: U.S. Airways combining operations with American Airlines.
Some passengers at Detroit Metro Airport are sounding off on the move, saying it will create another conglomerate.
WWJ Newsradio 950's Pat Sweeting spoke with travelers, including Mark Worth, who was catching a flight Thursday on U.S. Air.
"It seems we're going to come down to having just four major carriers. And, that means less competition and probably higher fares," said Worth. "So, from the point of view of the traveler, it might not be a good thing. [But] I can understand why the airlines want to maximize their profits."
Janet Eli of Dallas, who was stepping off a U.S. Airways flight from North Carolina, said it was first time she's flown the airline; an experience she enjoyed. "The pilot -- he did a really good job as far as bringing us in and plus I got here 15 minutes early. And the stewardesses -- they were on top of theirs [game], also," Eli said, adding that she's not sure it could get much better.
In addition to $150 dollars in savings, the two airlines reportedly expect to enjoy $1.5 dollars in combined benefits and $900 million in revenues from corporate travel.
The merged airline is to be known as American Airlines and be run by the CEO of U.S. Airways.
