U-M Fraternity Works To Curb Nuisance Activity After Numerous Complaints
ANN ARBOR (AP/WWJ) - A University of Michigan fraternity says it's taking steps to curb nuisance activity that was the subject of an Ann Arbor city attorney's office report.
The Ann Arbor News reports a two-page report delivered to the City Council this week indicates the city and its police department have fielded several dozen complaints about the Alpha Sigma Phi house in the last year alone.
Complaints from neighbors were about issues including alleged loud partying, screaming, drunken behavior and empty cups and beer bottles littering the property.
In November of last year, Councilmember Stephen Kunselman brought forward a resolution last week that passed requesting an investigation.
"This is an opportunity for this body to actually say enough is enough with the party culture that has gotten out of control in our community," Kunselman told the newspaper. "This is an opportunity… to defend the neighborhood from this obnoxious behavior and start setting an example of what we expect from these students that are enjoying their time in Ann Arbor at our expense."
Alpha Sigma Phi President Brian Klein says the fraternity is currently working to restore "a good relationship with our neighbors and the rest of our community."
Klein, who initially said the investigation was unwarranted, now says the fraternity will "continue to prove that our presence is beneficial and not a nuisance."
