TRW Outlines Vision For Semi-Automated Driving at IAA 2013
FRANKFURT, Germany (WWJ) -- Livonia-based TRW Automotive Holdings Corp. (NYSE: TRW) is highlighting how its next generation of safety technologies is laying the foundations to enable semi-automated driving at this year's Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA) in Frankfurt this year.
TRW says it will unveil several technology innovations and outline how it can support customers in meeting future legislative and New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) requirements.
"Over the next decade, active safety systems will become increasingly intelligent as greater efforts are made to reduce the number of road fatalities worldwide," said TRW chairman and CEO John Plant. "More automated functions will be introduced that will operate continuously in certain situations in addition to providing emergency support when needed. At IAA 2013, TRW is outlining its portfolio of semi-automated driving functions. Moreover, we will see a greater market penetration of both active and passive safety technologies as new mandates, changes to NCAP schemes and insurance incentives come into force worldwide. Our technology roadmap has been specifically designed to support these trends and to ensure that our systems are affordable for all vehicle segments and in all markets."
Technology highlights include:
Next generation radar concept 'AC1000' -- an advanced radar for 360 degree sensing applications to support a range of safety and convenience functions including adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, collision mitigation braking, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, blind spot detection, lane change assist, cross traffic alert and more.
Next generation video camera sensor 'S-CAM 3' -- enhanced video camera sensor with six times the processing power of previous generation systems to support lane departure warning and lane keeping systems, forward collision warning, forward distance indication, traffic sign recognition, high/low beam control, pedestrian detection and a range of new functions.
Next generation Safety Domain ECU 'SDE 2' -- an integration hub which can process data from multiple driver assist systems, chassis and suspension functions in one unit. SDE 2 will offer enhanced performance when compared to its previous generation and will be a key technology in supporting semi-automated driving and car2car communication.
Active/ Reversible seat belt technologies -- TRW's state-of-the-art seat belt systems help manage occupant energy during a vehicle crash. The latest TRW seat belt technologies can help vehicle occupants locate and fasten the buckle; reduce seat belt slack in dynamic driving situations; and decrease the possibility of occupants being out-of-position. TRW offers both front- and rear-seat applications.
Electronic Stability Control (ESC) family -- provides three main product architectures -- ABS, ESC and ESC Premium -- each with distinctly different packaging sizes, but sharing components for standardization purposes.
Integrated Brake Control system -- vacuum independent, brake boost and control system which offers the full range of brake system functionality from electronic stability control to regenerative braking and/or automated braking in a single, integrated small package. It offers improved pedal feel and performance over conventional systems with a lower overall weight.
Steering -- TRW's Electrically Powered Steering and Electrically Powered Hydraulic Steering systems offer considerable fuel/emission benefits and enhanced functions like side wind compensation, semi-automated parking and many more.
TRW had 2012 slaes of $26.4 billion. It operates in 25 countries and employs approximately 65,000 people worldwide.
