Truck Drives Through Storefront, Man With AK-47 Steals ATM

DETROIT (WWJ) - An armed robbery on Detroit's East Side leaves one business in utter disarray Saturday morning. WWJ's Stephanie Davis reports what happened at the BP gas station on Mt. Clare and Jefferson.

"Here's what we know at the moment from the owner of this BP gas station, around 6:00 this morning, a pickup truck crashed through this BP, ramming the door and knocking over the ATM which was inside," Davis said.

According to the gas station owner Abdul Beydoun, the passengers of the pickup truck grabbed the ATM. While this was happening, another car approached the scene.

"One of the vehicles, as you've seen, stormed inside of the building. They took the ATM machine causing a lot of damage. And the second vehicle, there were three people, the second vehicle went inside, the person with an AK-47 and pointed it on my cashier and robbed them," Beydoun said.

After robbing the store, the armed gunman ran from the store and, along with the driver of the pickup truck, got into another car and drove off.

Beydoun is thankful his store's security cameras captured the entire incident. He said it would probably be at least Monday before he is able to open the store again.

Police crews were able to extract the truck from the side of the building fairly quick.

Beydoun said it was the first robbery he has experienced since being in that location for about seven years. He estimates the damage at about $20,000 to $30,000.

No injuries have been reported. The suspects are at large.
