Troy Breaks Ground On New Transit Center
TROY (WWJ) - Let's get on with business. That's what the latest mayor of Troy is saying, following the recent recall election of Mayor Janice Daniels.
Leaders in Troy held a groundbreaking for the city's new transit center, off Coolidge, near 15 Mile Road, which will serve as a hub for new high-speed Amtrak trains.
Troy's acting mayor, Dane Slater, asked City Council members to join him in a show of solidarity at Tuesday's event. "We are all now in support of this project, and by them coming today I think it shows the unity that we need to have to move forward as a great city ...," he said.
Slater's predecessor, Janice Daniels, was ousted partially because of her stance against the transit center along with comments about gays that many residents found offensive.
Slater, who was appointed by Council, said he hopes February's special election to replace Daniels won't be too much of a distraction. "I'm certainly more than capable of putting everything behind us and moving forward," Slater said. "Let's get on with business and do what's best for Troy."
Troy received a federal grant for the construction of the Troy Multi-Modal Transit Facility through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) High-Speed Intercity Passenger Rail Program, Federal Rail Administration (FRA). The project is federally fully funded, with no city money required for construction.
The 2,000-square-foot station is scheduled to be complete and open in summer 2013.
