Trick-Or-Treat Safety Tips
DETROIT (WWJ) - Tonight's the night for candy, and Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard has some common sense reminders for parents.
"They should always be in pairs if there's no parent to accompany them, but I would suggest a parent to accompany them, certainly, until they're at an age where you can feel comfortable with them being out alone."
Bouchard said no matter what your trick or treater's age, inspect that candy, and if you find anything suspicious -- just toss it.
"Make sure your kids are wearing items that they can see and they can be seen. It's not a bad idea to put some reflective tape on their back and whatnot, have a flash light, have a cell phone, and when you get home, make it a fun thing but inspect all the candy."
Recommended trick-or-treat hours are between 6 and 8 pm. Bouchard said children should be reminded to only go to well-lit houses and remain on porches rather than entering houses. Children should also be reminded to cross streets at the corner, use crosswalks and do not cross between parked cars.
