Tribute To Nelson Mandela Scheduled At Music Hall For The Performing Arts
DETROIT (WWJ) - A tribute to former South African President Nelson Mandela is scheduled to take place in Detroit. The free event is scheduled for 3 p.m. December 15 at the Music Hall for the Performing Arts.
Mandela died Thursday at the age of 95.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1964 for leading a campaign of sabotage against the South African government.
Mandela was released in 1990 and later that year was celebrated with a rally at Tiger Stadium in Detroit as part of an eight-city tour through America in which he spoke out against apartheid.
In 1994, he was elected South Africa's first black president.
