Trial Starts In Woman's Strangling, Dismemberment
PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) - A prosecutor says a man strangled his girlfriend, then cut up her body and stored the pieces in various parts of their suburban Detroit home.
Oakland County Assistant Prosecutor gave an opening statement Monday at the first-degree murder trial of 29-year-old William Dhondt in the death of 29-year-old Kaitlin Hehir.
Farmington police say Dhondt reported Hehir missing in February 2013 and they arrested Dhont after finding the body parts.
Defense lawyer Judith Gracey says Dhondt snapped during a drunken argument and didn't mean to kill Hehir.
First-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole in Michigan.
Testimony resumes Tuesday in Circuit Judge Phyllis McMillen's courtroom in Pontiac.
