Trial Starting In Death Of Kmart Security Guard
A judge has ruled that statements made by two Pontiac residents accused of killing a Kmart loss prevention officer were knowingly and voluntarily made. Oakland Circuit Judge Leo Bowman's ruling makes them admissible during trial.
20-year-old Samantha Lorraine Lomasney and 39-year-old James Dean Woodworth are scheduled to go on trial today. The two are charged with first-degree felony murder and unarmed robbery in the Jan. 14 death of Greg Paul Wainio. Lomasney also faces charges of operating a vehicle with a suspended or revoked license.
Authorities say Woodworth tried to steal CDs from a Waterford Township Kmart. Wainio chased Woodworth and struggled with him as he got in a waiting 1994 GMC Jimmy driven by Lomasney.
According to police, Wainio stopped Woodworth from closing the passenger door, while Lomasney allegedly drove the Jimmy away at a high rate of speed and hit pillars outside the store in an attempt to knock Wainio from the vehicle. Police said Wainio fell and was dragged more than 200 feet.
Lomasney and Woodworth were taken into custody and interviewed by police on the same day as the incident. Waterford Police Det. Rick Lemos, who interviewed the defendants, testified that they were advised of their Miranda rights and agreed to waive those rights and talk.
